6 Viral TikTok Cleaning Hacks: Only 2 Actually Worked

I spent a Tuesday night scrubbing my shower with a grapefruit and salt because TikTok told me it would work better than actual cleaner.

It didn’t.

What it did do was leave my tub covered in pulp, cost me $3 for a grapefruit I didn’t even want to eat, and waste 25 minutes I’ll never get back. But I kept going. Because once you start testing TikTok cleaning hacks, you can’t stop until you’ve either found the holy grail or confirmed that most of them are just expensive performance art.

So I tested six of the most viral cleaning hacks TikTok swears by. I followed the instructions exactly. I used the same products people recommend in the comments. I gave each one a fair shot.

The result: Two actually worked. Four were complete wastes of time, money, or both.

If you’re trying to keep your home clean on a budget without falling for internet gimmicks, my home decorating on a budget guide covers what’s actually worth your money (spoiler: it’s not grapefruit).

How I Tested These Cleaning Hacks

Testing period: 2 weeks in January 2026

Budget: $38.74 (for supplies I didn’t already own)

Method: Follow TikTok instructions exactly, test on real messes in my apartment, rate effectiveness

I’m not a professional cleaner. I’m just a person with a normal amount of dirt, soap scum, and burnt-on food who wanted to know if these hacks actually save time or money compared to using regular cleaning products.

Each hack got rated on three criteria:

  • Did it work? (Yes, No, Kinda)
  • Time: How long it actually took vs. using a normal cleaner
  • Cost: What I spent vs. what I would’ve spent on a regular product

HACK 1: Dawn Dish Soap + Vinegar Shower Spray ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

The claim: Mix equal parts blue Dawn dish soap and white vinegar in a spray bottle, spray on shower walls and tub, let sit 30 minutes, wipe clean. No scrubbing needed.

What I did: Mixed 1 cup Dawn + 1 cup vinegar, sprayed my shower (which had 3+ weeks of soap scum buildup because I’m not perfect), waited 30 minutes, wiped with a microfiber cloth.

Did it work? YES. Shockingly well.

The soap scum came off with almost zero scrubbing. I’m talking one pass with the cloth and it was gone. My shower hasn’t been this clean since I moved in two years ago.

Time: 5 minutes active work (spraying + wiping), 30 minutes waiting. Beats scrubbing for 20 minutes straight.

Cost: $3.47 (Dawn: $2.99, vinegar: $0.48 per cup from a gallon jug I already owned)

Why it works: According to cleaning chemist Sarah Aguirre, Dawn cuts through grease and oil-based residue (which is what soap scum is), while vinegar breaks down mineral deposits. Together they’re basically a DIY degreaser + descaler.

Downsides: It smells bad for about 10 minutes (vinegar + soap combo is pungent). Also, don’t heat it or shake it too hard — it foams like crazy and makes a mess.

Verdict: THIS ONE IS REAL. I’ve used this twice since testing and it works every time.

HACK 2: Dishwasher Tablet for Burnt Pans ⭐⭐⭐⭐

The claim: Fill a burnt pan with hot water, drop in a dishwasher tablet, let it dissolve and soak, burnt bits will wipe right off.

What I did: I had a stainless steel pan with burnt-on tomato sauce from last week’s failed pasta attempt. Filled it with hot tap water, dropped in a Finish dishwasher tablet, let it sit for 45 minutes.

Did it work? Mostly, yes.

The burnt bits softened significantly. About 80% wiped off with a sponge, the remaining 20% needed light scrubbing with a non-scratch pad. But it was way easier than scrubbing the whole pan from scratch.

Time: 45-minute soak + 5 minutes scrubbing = 50 minutes total (but only 5 minutes of actual work)

Cost: $0.22 per tablet (I buy them in bulk at Costco)

Why it works: Dishwasher tablets contain enzymes and surfactants designed to break down baked-on food. Letting them soak in hot water gives them time to work their magic.

Downsides: Doesn’t work on really stubborn carbon buildup (like if you’ve burnt something multiple times in the same spot). Also, one tablet per pan gets expensive if you burn things often (ask me how I know).

Verdict: WORKS for moderate burnt messes. Not a miracle, but better than straight scrubbing.

HACK 3: Vinegar + Baking Soda for Everything ⭐

The claim: Baking soda + vinegar is a natural, eco-friendly cleaner that works on everything from drains to counters to toilets.

What I did: Tested it on three surfaces:

  1. Clogged bathroom sink drain
  2. Grimy kitchen countertop
  3. Toilet bowl stains

Did it work? Barely.

Drain: Poured 1/2 cup baking soda down, followed by 1 cup vinegar (lots of fizzing!), let sit 15 minutes, flushed with hot water. The drain was slightly less slow. Not actually unclogged.

Countertop: Made a paste (3:1 baking soda to water), scrubbed the counter. It worked… about as well as just using dish soap and water. No noticeable improvement.

Toilet: Sprinkled baking soda in the bowl, poured in vinegar, let it fizz for 10 minutes, scrubbed. The stains did not budge. Used regular toilet cleaner afterward and they came right off.

Time: 40 minutes total across all three tests (way longer than just using actual cleaners)

Cost: $1.50ish (baking soda + vinegar)

Why it doesn’t work as well as TikTok claims: The fizzing reaction is fun to watch, but it’s actually neutralizing the cleaning power of both ingredients. According to chemistry educator Melissa Maker, once baking soda (a base) and vinegar (an acid) react, you’re left with mostly water and a tiny bit of sodium acetate — not an effective cleaner.

Downsides: Time-consuming, not very effective, leaves a weird residue.

Verdict: SKIP. Baking soda alone is great for scrubbing. Vinegar alone is great for descaling. Together? Just a science experiment.

HACK 4: Pink Stuff Paste for Stubborn Stains ⭐⭐⭐

The claim: The Pink Stuff is a miracle cleaner that removes stains, scuffs, and grime from anything.

What I did: Tested it on:

  1. Scuff marks on white sneakers
  2. Grease splatter on my stove
  3. Water stains on my stainless steel sink

Did it work? Kinda.

Sneakers: Worked pretty well. Scuff marks lightened significantly (not gone, but way better). Took about 5 minutes of scrubbing per shoe.

Stove: Worked okay. Grease came off, but not any better than using dish soap and a scrub brush. Same result, more expensive.

Sink: Worked decently on water stains, but Bar Keeper’s Friend (which costs $2 less) works better.

Time: 15 minutes total

Cost: $5.99 for a tub at Target

Why it’s overhyped: The Pink Stuff is basically a mildly abrasive paste (similar to Soft Scrub or Bar Keeper’s Friend). It works because of the abrasive particles, not because it’s magic. You can get the same results with cheaper alternatives.

Downsides: Expensive compared to similar products. Requires elbow grease (it’s not a “spray and wipe” situation). The pink color gets everywhere.

Verdict: WORKS, but it’s not special. Buy Bar Keeper’s Friend instead — it’s cheaper and more effective.

HACK 5: Dryer Sheets to Clean Baseboards ⭐⭐

The claim: Wipe baseboards with a dryer sheet (used or new) to remove dust and prevent it from settling again.

What I did: Wiped my living room baseboards with a used dryer sheet (because TikTok says the used ones work best).

Did it work? Technically yes, but…

The dust came off. But it also came off when I wiped baseboards with a damp microfiber cloth, which is free and doesn’t leave a weird residue.

Time: 10 minutes for one room

Cost: $0 (used dryer sheet from the laundry)

Why it’s not worth it: Dryer sheets do have anti-static properties that theoretically repel dust. But in practice, you still have to wipe baseboards again in a week or two. The “repelling dust” claim is oversold.

Downsides: Leaves a faint waxy residue. Doesn’t clean any better than a damp cloth. If you don’t use dryer sheets, you’d have to buy them just for this (why?).

Verdict: SKIP. Just use a damp microfiber cloth.

HACK 6: Grapefruit + Salt to Clean Shower ⭐

The claim: Cut a grapefruit in half, sprinkle salt on it, scrub your shower with it. Natural, non-toxic, effective.

What I did: Cut a grapefruit, covered it in coarse salt, scrubbed my tub for 10 minutes.

Did it work? No.

It smelled nice. That’s it. The soap scum did not budge. The grapefruit pulp got everywhere. I had to rinse the tub three times to get rid of the seeds and pith chunks. Then I used actual cleaner to remove the soap scum.

Time: 10 minutes scrubbing + 5 minutes rinsing the grapefruit mess = 15 wasted minutes

Cost: $3.00 for one grapefruit

Why it’s a myth: Citrus does have mild acidity, and salt is abrasive, but neither is strong enough to cut through built-up soap scum or hard water stains. You’d need to scrub for 30+ minutes with significant pressure to see any results — at which point, a $2 bottle of cleaner would’ve finished the job in 5 minutes.

Downsides: Messy, expensive (grapefruit costs more than a bottle of cleaner), ineffective.

Verdict: HARD SKIP. This is Instagram aesthetics, not actual cleaning.

What I Learned About Viral Cleaning Hacks

1. If it looks pretty in a video, it’s probably not practical

The grapefruit hack looks beautiful in a 30-second TikTok. In real life, it’s sticky, messy, and expensive.

2. Some “natural” hacks work, but not because they’re natural

Dawn + vinegar works because of chemistry (surfactants + acid), not because it’s “natural.” The fact that it’s made from household items is a bonus, not the reason it works.

3. “Miracle” products are usually just rebranded basics

The Pink Stuff is fine. It’s also just mildly abrasive paste in a pink tub. You can get the same results with Bar Keeper’s Friend for $3 less.

4. Baking soda + vinegar together is a scam

Use them separately. Together, they neutralize each other and you’re left with fizzy water.

5. The best cleaning hack is just… using the right cleaner for the job

Shocking, I know. But toilet bowl cleaner works on toilets. Degreaser works on grease. Multipurpose spray works on counters. You don’t need grapefruit.
